How to look out for each other at festivals and events – #SAFEMATES
We all want to make sure we have the best time possible at events and one way to do this is to make sure we look after each other. We have set out below some handy hints on how to do this:-
- Plan your day – if you attend in a group, plan your time to know when people are heading back to campsites, when they will be in the arena and what artists you are all planning to see. If someone gets lost this will help the event locate them if their location is likely to be known.
- Have a set meeting point – make this as obvious and visible as possible eg the Ferris wheel, a particular food vendor or a particular piece of artwork at the event. If you are camping have a meeting point in the campsite and in the arena when you are in there.
- Timescales – if you have lost a friend make sure you agree how long it will be before you head to the agreed meeting point eg half an hour after they were last seen.
- Use What3Words – using what3words can be a great way to locate your tent and any meeting points you have. It’s also a good idea to use what3words for the car park if you have driven.
- Check-in with each other – events can be an overwhelming place for some. Check in with your friends, see how they are. If you notice one of your friends struggling take the time to see if they need support or need to take time out with a listening ear.
- Know where to seek support – when you arrive at an event familiarise yourself with what services there are on site. Places to look out for are the medical tent, the welfare tent, the campsite hub, any support charities who are on site.
- Sober buddy – if you are planning to drink alcohol or use substances, have at least one friend who stays sober. If anything then goes a bit wonky they can seek help straight away. Never be worried to seek help, the services at events do not judge – they are there to keep you safe.
- No person left behind – stick together! Do not leave anyone behind on their own. Events are always best enjoyed with your friends by your side.
